The whole country is shocked after the video of atrocities on women in Manipur went viral. Here 2 women of the Kuki community were made to run naked, they were assaulted. This video is of May 4, which went viral on Wednesday. There are two surprising aspects in this incident. First- On May 4, 1000 armed attackers entered Bi Phainom village of Kangpokpi. 2 men and 3 women of the Kuki community hid in the forest out of fear. He was caught by the attackers. The Nongpok Sekmai police rescued them and started taking them to the police station, but the crowd snatched them away from the police.

Second- This aspect is more dangerous. Actually, India Today’s Open-Source Intelligence (OSINT) team has analyzed the satellite images. It is clearly known in this footage that this incident took place just one km away from the police station, which was given the status of the best police station in the country by the government.

Nongpok Sekmai Police Station got the title

Every year the Government of India selects the best performing police stations across the country after examining them on several parameters. According to a statement issued by the Ministry of Home Affairs, the criteria for selection includes the performance of the police in cases related to crime against women as well as crime against weaker sections. Nongpok Sekmai Police Station ‘Best in the country’ in the year 2020 police station status was given. The video that sparked nationwide outrage is just a kilometer away from the spot where the mob thrashed the women of the Kuki community.

Satellite images and video footage were matched

According to the police report, the women were attacked on May 4, but after the video went viral on social media on July 19, every citizen of the country is angry. Aaj Tak analyzed open-source satellite images of the southern peaks to identify the exact location of the incident. A surprising footage was found in the pictures. Actually, it has been mentioned in the FIR that the incident took place at 3 pm, from which we come to the conclusion that it was sunset at that time and it is also clearly visible from the footage that this area was definitely West. B of the frames extracted from the video. After examining and matching the layout of mountain ranges located in Phenom village, it was revealed that this place is located in the vicinity of Nongpok Sekmai Police Station.

Our investigation now focused on the Nongpok Sekmai Police Station and the area encompassing the area between the peaks of Nongmai Ching and Tampaba. A small white hut is visible just below the hills in the video. The same white hut was also visible on the satellite image of Google Earth, which came to the fore in our investigation.

These similarities in satellite images and videos

In one frame of the video, the mob is also seen taking two women across the paddy fields to a small white hut. By following the same path, we found out where the crowd was going. The crowd then gets down on another road, which was parallel to the road seen in the video. We took some more satellite images to take our investigation to a more precise conclusion. In these pictures, we saw a tree located on the side of the road, which is also visible in the video. When the person filming the video turned his camera to the right, a hill appeared next to a pucca house with an orange roof. Its picture also matched with the satellite image. Not only this, the layout of the paddy field shown in the video is also visible in the satellite image.

The crime scene is very close to the police station

Shockingly, according to Google Earth, the site of the attack is about 850 meters from the Nongpok Sekmai police station, which was awarded the title of ‘best police station in the country’ in 2020. The region has been challenged by ethnic violence for the past two months, but the reality is still far from normal, as locals live in relief camps, battling curfews, internet shutdowns, sporadic killings and arson.

In what time could the police have conducted the search?

There can be no clear answer to this question. Because it took more than 2 months for the police to arrest the suspects. Apart from this, many questions are being raised on the law enforcement agencies. This area is a mountainous rural area, where the population is scattered. It will be easier to find in rural environment than densely populated multi-storey buildings. We used Google’s ‘Open Buildings Dataset’ to estimate the number of houses from Nongpok Sekmai police station to Pechi Awang Leikai, the village of the first accused arrested by the police.

Disclosures after examining the data

Based on the data, we found a total of 7040 houses in the area. Whose average area is 59.6 square meters. We further cleaned this data to filter out those structures. We used Google’s standard confidence score. Which is a parameter provided to filter out unconfirmed buildings. As a result the number of possible buildings reduced to 4603 with an average area of ​​75 square meters. In simple words, the police could have searched the entire locality, even if they had searched 3 houses per hour, they could have searched the entire locality long before the video went viral.
