Manipur has been in the grip of violence since May 3. After this, the armored vehicle of Assam Rifles escorted Aaj Tak’s team safely from the spot. In this area, on one side of the road there are villages of Kuki community and on the other side there are villages of Meitei community. Many bunkers have been made in front of each other and weapons have been kept, due to which they attack each other.

Earlier, violence broke out in Churachandpur on Saturday night as well. There was firing between two groups in Torbung area. Local people say that miscreants have also carried out arson at some places.

Since the outbreak of ethnic violence in Manipur, more than 150 people have died so far. A large number of people have been injured. The violence began when the Kuki community took out a ‘tribal solidarity march’ in the hill districts, protesting the Meitei community’s demand for inclusion in the Scheduled Tribes (ST). The population of Manipur is about 53 percent of the Meitei community. They live mostly in the Imphal Valley, while the Kuki and Naga tribesmen account for 40 percent and live mostly in the hill districts.
