Pakistan wants to join BRICS: South Africa’s envoy to BRICS recently announced that more than 40 countries have expressed interest in joining the grouping, potentially increasing the political influence of the organisation. This year the BRICS 2023 conference is going to be held in South Africa from 22 to 24 August. At the same time, there is a possibility of Pakistan participating as a guest member in the BRICS summit to be held in Russia in the next year i.e. 2024.

According to the report of Pakistan Today, Pakistan has shown interest to join BRICS. Pakistan is also likely to officially attend its next meeting to be held in Kazan, Russia. Pakistan’s efforts to join BRICS are supported by China and Russia, who want to expand the influence of BRICS.

Saudi Arabia at the BRICS summit
Apart from Pakistan, Algeria and Saudi Arabia are also expected to participate in the next BRICS summit. Algeria to invest $1.5B in BRICS bank. South Africa has proposed expansion of BRICS in 2018. However, formal talks started only last year. The growing interest of many countries indicates the potential for increased cooperation and partnership within the bloc.

This potentially increases its importance in global affairs. Regarding this, South Africa’s ambassador to the BRICS group, Anil Sooklal, spoke to reporters in Johannesburg on Thursday (July 20) and revealed that many countries have expressed interest in joining the group.

Expansion of BRICS grouping full of challenges
South Africa is set to host the upcoming BRICS summit next month. To make it a truly global event, the country has extended invitations to 69 world leaders. However, the expansion of the BRICS grouping is fraught with challenges. While China and South Africa are supporters of development, Russia is also expected to join hands. On the other hand, according to the Eurasia group, Brazil and India are expressing concern about a possible decline in their power and may oppose such expansion.
