Israel Under PM Benjamin Netanyahu New Law Passes In Parliament Against Curbs The Power Of The Supreme Court

Israeli Supreme Court Power: Israel’s parliament on Monday (July 24) approved a controversial law that prevents judicial restraint on political power. This decision is an important part of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s plan to reshape the country’s legal system.

There were 64 votes in favor of the bill in the Israeli Parliament and not a single vote against it. The opposition boycotted the division of votes on the bill in protest. This is the first major bill to be passed in the judicial reform of the government.

modification attempt failed
Several last-minute attempts within the Israeli parliament to amend the bill or reach a broad procedural compromise with the opposition failed. Ideas put forward to soften the law, which were discussed by Prime Minister Netanyahu and the main leaders of the coalition, did not yield any result. The Israeli parliament voted after almost 30 hours of continuous debate that began on Sunday morning to approve the bill.

thousands of protesters took to the streets
By law, the courts are prohibited from conducting any inquiry into the reasonableness of the decisions of the cabinet and ministers. After the approval of the bill, now the Supreme Court has lost the power to declare the government’s decisions unfair. Earlier, the Supreme Court could ban many decisions of the government.

US President Joe Biden’s advice
Israel’s Prime Minister Netanyahu and his far-right allies announced plans to end the Supreme Court’s blocking power in January, days after taking office. He believed that it was needed to curb the excessive powers enjoyed by unelected judges. At the same time, US President Joe Biden had also requested Netanyahu to uphold the authority of the Supreme Court.
