Elon Musk Will Rebrand Twitter as X, But Crypto Twitter Has Other Ideas

Twitter users along with the enthusiastic crypto community may soon see a very different version of the social media app – which is set to ditch its iconic blue bird logo with an “X” as part of a major rebrand.

However, crypto Twitter isn’t particularly thrilled with some of the changes.

In a series of tweets on July 23, Musk indicated that the platform would be rebranded to “X” as early as Monday, an early step in its eventual transformation into an “Everything App”.

According to various tweets by Musk and a poll, the rebrand may include changing Twitter’s color scheme to black, removing Twitter’s blue bird logo, and renaming it to X.

The website used to access the social media platform may also change, with Musk confirming that X.com, which was the online address of his 1999-founded financial services start-up that was sold to PayPal, is now redirecting to Twitter.

According to the Wayback Machine, prior to the change, x.com was a mostly blank website that displayed only the letters “x”. Earlier, it redirected to Musk’s Boring Company website. In the early 2000s the website URL contained a long term pointing to PayPal and even a term denoting eBay’s corporate site.

In March, Musk also founded tech firm X Corp as Twitter’s parent company to realize his vision for an app like WeChat.

Crypto Twitter calls rebrand decision ‘insane’

However, many crypto Twitter users have not been thrilled with the proposed changes. Twitter has been a bastion for the crypto community, with over 1 billion tweets about crypto between 2020 and 2022 according to March Hypebeast.eport.

Dan Held, Head of Marketing, Trust Machines Said Twitter was “iconic”, rebranding Musk to X was “crazy”.

Others have been resistant to the proposed X rebrand. Crypto blogger Tiffany Fong said she’s “still calling it Twitter,” with podcast host Peter McCormack agreeing.

However, some who supported the idea were saying that the super-app has been Musk’s vision since leaving PayPal and point to Musk’s October do He explicitly stated that his Twitter purchase was supposed to accelerate the creation of X.

Others are offering their own thoughts on how Musk should proceed with X. AX Infinity co-founder Jeff “Jiho” Zierlin asked Twitter to keep the name but add a crypto wallet called X to allow users to spend and tip platform creators.

Meanwhile, in a July 23 post, Twitter chief Linda Yacarino added further clues about X, saying it would have “limitless interactivity”, support multiple media formats, and feature payments and banking — a feature Musk has reportedly said he wants to support crypto.

Without specifying how, Yacarino said the upcoming app would also be powered by artificial intelligence, although Musk has previously said AI will be used to detect manipulation of public opinion.

The rebrand comes as Musk acknowledged on July 15 that Twitter’s advertising revenue had dropped by 50% and that the company was heavily in debt, although it is unknown over what time frame the revenue decline occurred.
