(Reuters) – Elon Musk said on Sunday he was considering changing Twitter’s logo, tweeting: “And soon we will be saying goodbye to the Twitter brand and slowly all the birds.”

In a post on the site at 12:06am ET (0406 GMT), the social media platform’s billionaire owner said: “If a cool X logo is posted tonight, we’ll have it live around the world tomorrow.”

Musk posted an image of a blinking “X”, and later in a Twitter Space audio chat, when asked if the Twitter logo would change, replied “yes”, adding that “it should have happened a long time ago”.

During Musk’s tumultuous tenure since buying Twitter in October, the company has changed its business name to X Corp, reflecting the billionaire’s vision of building a “super app” like China’s WeChat.

The company did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Twitter’s website states that its logo depicting a blue bird is “our most recognizable asset”. It added, “That’s why we’re so protective of it.”

In April the bird was temporarily replaced by a ‘K dog’, increasing the market value of the meme coin.

The company faced widespread criticism from users and marketing professionals when Musk announced earlier this month that Twitter would limit how many tweets different accounts could read per day.

The daily limits helped spur the growth of Meta-owned rival service Threads, which surpassed 100 million sign-ups within five days of launch.

Twitter’s most recent complication was a lawsuit filed Tuesday that claims the company owes former employees at least $500 million in severance pay. Since Musk acquired it, the company has laid off more than half its workforce to cut costs.
