Canada Pro-Khalistan: Federal security services in Canada have increased security at the residence of India’s High Commissioner following online threats linked to the pro-Khalistan Kill India campaign. A senior Indian official said separatist elements have crossed the border with the new threat.
A senior Indian official living in Canada said that the Khalistanis have posted an online post on 15 August. According to this post, threats have been made to kill Indians. This official said that it has also seen an increase in the campaign of Khalistanis in Ottawa, Toronto and Vancouver after July 8.
India’s foreign minister has raised the issue
India has formally conveyed its concerns about the new threat to bases Indian missions from the separatist group Sikhs for Justice (SFJ). An official acknowledged that the country’s foreign ministry, from Global Affairs Canada to the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP), has been very sensitive to the increased threat.
He told that many Canadian officers are also working with the local police forces regarding diplomatic security. Recently, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar raised the ongoing threat to Canadian Foreign Minister Melanie Jolie during the ministerial meeting of the Association of South East Asian Nations in Jakarta on 14 July.
S Jaishankar had informed by tweeting that he underlined the importance of ensuring the safety of our diplomats. There is a need to fight strongly against violence. To this, Canadian Foreign Minister Melanie Jolie replied that Canada takes very seriously its obligations under the Vienna Convention on the Protection of Diplomats.
Murder of Hardeep Singh Nijjar
The Sikhs for Justice (SFJ) threats have increased since its leading figure in British Columbia, Hardeep Singh Nijjar, was murdered on June 18 in the parking lot of the Guru Nanak Singh Gurdwara Sahib in Surrey. This was followed by Kill India posters, targeting Indian officials including High Commissioner Sanjay Kumar Verma and the Consul Generals in Toronto and Vancouver. SFJ has blamed India for the murder of Hardeep Singh Nijjar.
